The Florida Keys, located just south of Miami, are a breathtaking chain of more than 40 islands connected to the mainland by the iconic Overseas Highway. This scenic stretch of road winds over turquoise waters, linking a series of unique island communities that each offer their own charm, culture, and natural beauty.

Key Largo is one of the most popular destinations for private yacht charters departing from Miami. Visitors are captivated by the laid-back charm of the Keys, where world-famous sunsets, pristine tropical beaches, and some of the best snorkeling and scuba diving sites in the world create an atmosphere of pure island magic.

Ernest Hemingway was among those who felt the magnetic pull of the Keys, calling Key West home for many years, while Jimmy Buffett forever captured their carefree spirit through his music. Visitors to the Keys are instantly embraced by their Caribbean charm—where golden sunshine, gentle ocean breezes, and turquoise waters create a world apart. Steeped in history, culture, and natural beauty, the Florida Keys remain one of the most romantic and inspiring destinations in the world.

## Key Largo, the largest island in the Florida Keys, was originally named Cayo Largo—Spanish for “Long Key”—by its early settlers. Known worldwide as The Diving Capital of the World, Key Largo is home to one of the planet’s most spectacular living coral reefs, located just a few miles offshore. As you arrive, you’ll notice an abundance of charming, custom-built houseboats dotting the horizon—a true reflection of the laid-back, nautical lifestyle that defines life in the Keys.

## Each year, thousands of boaters and divers are drawn to Key Largo’s peaceful yet vibrant atmosphere. While the diving here is world-class, the island itself has few natural beaches—its shoreline lined with lush mangroves and dense coastal vegetation that create a rugged, rocky edge and a uniquely natural charm.

## Travelers should not miss a visit to John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, the first undersea park established in the United States. Here, guests can enjoy scuba diving excursions, fishing trips, glass-bottom boat tours, powerboat rentals, and snorkeling adventures that reveal vibrant coral formations and even the remains of an early Spanish shipwreck just 100 feet offshore. For nature lovers and adventurers alike, Key Largo offers easy access to Florida Bay and Everglades National Park, where wildlife thrives in its natural habitat. Eco-tours, birdwatching, kayaking, and guided backcountry trips—whether for a day or an overnight camping adventure—provide an unforgettable glimpse into the untamed beauty of South Florida.

## Dining in Key Largo is an experience in itself, whether you prefer casual beachside cafés or upscale seafood restaurants. The area is renowned for its fresh local catch, with fish houses and beach clubs serving classic South Florida specialties. During stone crab season, be sure to visit one of the local fisheries—where you can purchase your feast directly from the source for a fraction of restaurant prices, complete with a mallet and the famous honey mustard dipping sauce. With an abundance of freshly caught fish and shellfish, every meal in Key Largo is an opportunity to savor the true flavors of the Florida Keys.

## The nightlife in Key Largo is laid-back yet full of personality—so slip on your flip-flops and join the locals for some island-style fun. You’ll find residents and visitors alike singing karaoke to classic rock in lively “dive” bars, or you might stumble upon a festive Polynesian luau on the north side of the island. As the sun sets, unwind with a rum punch in hand, lounging beneath tiki torches while the rhythm of island music and the sway of palm trees set the perfect tropical mood.

Key West, originally named *Cayo Hueso* or “Key of Bones” by the early Spanish settlers, is the southernmost and most populous of the Florida Keys. Rich in history and character, it has long been a haven for writers, artists, and adventurers alike. Connected to the mainland by the iconic Overseas Highway, Key West stands out as the most vibrant and energetic of all the Keys—a place where creativity, culture, and island life come together in unforgettable harmony.

Home to an eclectic mix of famous restaurants, lively bars, and historic landmarks, Key West is a one-of-a-kind destination that perfectly blends laid-back charm with artistic flair. Quirky, colorful, and effortlessly scenic, it stands among the most unique places in the United States. Just 90 miles from Cuba, this vibrant island city is celebrated for its tropical climate, free-spirited lifestyle, and a “live-and-let-live” attitude that defines its character. For more than two centuries, Key West has welcomed travelers seeking to escape the ordinary and embrace a world where every day feels like a celebration.

Imagine a tropical version of New Orleans—this is Key West! Known as the home of the Conch Republic, this lively island offers an endless array of attractions, from historic tours and vibrant street performers to local art galleries and world-class dining. Visitors flock to Mallory Square for its famous sunset celebrations and to Duval Street for its eclectic nightlife, where every corner hums with music, laughter, and the welcoming spirit that makes Key West a paradise for all lifestyles.

Many notable figures have called Key West home over the years, including Ernest Hemingway, President Harry S. Truman, poet Robert Frost, singer-songwriter Jimmy Buffett, playwright Tennessee Williams, treasure hunter Mel Fisher, and designer Calvin Klein. Their lasting influence adds to the island’s rich cultural tapestry and timeless allure.

Dining in Key West is an experience unto itself, offering everything from five-star gourmet restaurants to laid-back cafés and lively raw bars. Whether along Duval Street, the oceanfront, or tucked away in Old Town or the Historic Seaport, many eateries are housed in charming historic homes and distinctive buildings that reflect the island’s eclectic architecture. With its creative chefs, fresh seafood, and vibrant atmosphere, every meal in Key West feels like part of the adventure.

And of course—don’t forget to try the famous Key Lime Pie, a true island classic! While sightseeing, stop by the legendary Sloppy Joe’s for a taste of Key West history, then head to the Southernmost Point for a must-have photo at the colorful marker that signifies the southernmost tip of the continental United States.

Be sure to visit the Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum, where “Papa” lived for many years and penned many of his greatest works, including *A Farewell to Arms.* As you wander through the beautifully preserved home and gardens—still inhabited by the famous six-toed cats—you’ll get a glimpse into the life of one of America’s most iconic writers, who spent his days crafting timeless stories and his evenings perfecting some of today’s most beloved cocktails.

###### Key West enjoys one of the warmest climates in the United States. Like most tropical destinations, it experiences two main seasons—the dry season and the wet season.

The **dry season**, from November through April, is typically sunny, warm, and comfortable, with only about 25% of the island’s annual rainfall. Showers during this time are usually brief and occur ahead of passing cold fronts, though some winters can bring periods of drought.

From **May through October**, the **wet season** arrives, bringing short but frequent tropical downpours, followed by brilliant sunshine and blue skies. This balance of sun and rain keeps the island lush, vibrant, and full of life year-round.

About 70 miles west of Key West lies **Dry Tortugas National Park**, a hidden gem accessible by private yacht charter or via the **Yankee Freedom III** daily ferry. The park’s crown jewel, **Fort Jefferson**, is a massive 19th-century fortress once used as a prison during the Civil War. Surrounded by crystal-clear waters and soft, powdery beaches, Dry Tortugas is often hailed as having the most pristine shores in all the Keys. With its mix of history, natural beauty, and serenity, it’s truly a final stop worth exploring.

## Key West is also a seaport destination for many large passenger cruise ships heading to various parts of the Caribbean, Mexico, and other South American destinations.

## Don’t be mislead, this is not your typical day-cruise. Situated about 150 miles SW of Miami it is a challenging boat ride of about 2 or three days, depending on the speed of the boat. PLUS an equal return time. It’s also a long haul, of 4 or 5 hours of intense and frustrating driving on a two lane highway.

## Points of interest along the way however are Snake Creek, Seven Mile Bridge, Duck Key, Marathon and other interesting and historical places.

## In summary, Key West and the different ways to access this beautiful place are a unique almost other-worldly experience. Not at all like the USA mainland. Frankly you could be in the Caribbean!!

## CHARTER LOVE

I bareboat chartered the 38′ Beneteau, Amazing Grace, through Ed Elder at Florida's Finest Yachts. I found Ed to be very responsive to my questions and concerns. The boat was presented (and returned!) in excellent condition. Paul Robinson clearly carefully critiqued my sailing resume and make good suggestions about the specific boat for us. During our adventure, the mechanic, Jacob, was readily available and was super helpful with various technical questions. Jacob clearly knew the boat well. I would highly recommend this organization for a boat charter in Miami!

I've been using this company for 10 years, service is excellent, sales office is very friendly and quick to reply to our requests. I highly recommend this. We've used Florida's Finest Yachts for a birthday party on a private yacht for 6 of our friends with a jet ski and amazing food cooked on board by their personal chef... we also chartered three sail catamarans and held a regatta for a corporate function we had in Miami last Spring. This was super cool! A race, tropical drinks, and a delicious BBQ. We have friends that charter their 84' Lazarra every year to the Bahamas from this company, they love it. My family and I hope to do this next year!
